Part 1

English Language Course

The LSSE leads the way by making the ‘English Language Course,’ a mandatory part of the Certificate in Health & Social Care Mandatory Training. This not only enables carers with elementary or lower intermediate level English to give effective and safe care, it also empowers them with the necessary confidence they need to apply for work, and be employed in an English speaking setting. The LSSE believes in inclusion and equality, hence, there are no stringent entry requirements for keen students who wish to attain the ‘Certificate in Health & Social Care Mandatory Training.’ All that the LSSE requires, is for candidates to be genuinely interested in health and social care; and to have an acceptable standard of English language and grammar, that they want to improve upon.

The grammar focus includes putting a spotlight on certain words and prepositions.

Module 2

A Business Trip

This section covers several elements, including communication and food. It looks at a story of two people who travelled to the UK (one from Africa, and the other from Asia); and examines a page from an English holiday brochure. In addition to this, formal and informal letter writing is analysed, and some difference in global English are explained. The grammar focus is on tenses and adjectives.

Module 3

Science

This section comprises a short biography of the famous cosmologist, Stephen Hawking, and then assigns students with various tasks, including writing about another well known scientist, with a grammar focus on passive verbs. There is also a second short biography on John Lennon. The corresponding task is to write about another famous person, but this time, the grammar focus is on conjunctions and adjectives (namely the comparison of adjectives); as well as a table of tenses, and irregular verbs.
